Successful slitter winder rebuild at UPM Nordland Papier
The rebuild of the slitter winder UR6 (Jagenberg VariStep) at UPM Nordland Papier was required to modernize the existing operating and control system and to ensure the availability of spare parts. Safety standards were also updated during the modernization as this is a top priority for UPM.

In addition to these measures, it was also important to increase the machine’s productivity and flexibility. And to facilitate driving 12 rolls in the future, the number of blades was increased from 8 to 13.

The time required and the reliability of positioning were significantly improved by the automatic, and much more precise, adjustment and fixing of the upper and lower blades. The increased maximum number of finished rolls per set with minimal cutting widths of 150 mm also called for an improved spreading system. A standard spreader roll with manually adjustable sheet orientation was installed before the rebuild. The radian measure can be set automatically at the newly-installed tandem spreader roll via a recipe database, according to the cut number, roll width and paper quality.

All the customer’s rebuild objectives were successfully achieved and the plant returned to operation on the scheduled date.

Mr Rüther, UPM Nordland Paper project manager, said: “This is not the first project which we have carried out with Bellmer GapCon or its respective predecessor companies. The project schedule was agreed and all objectives have been achieved.”

Bellmer GapCon has become a slitter winder specialist in recent years. In addition to new plants, the company rebuilds slitter winders of all well-known manufacturers, thanks to its technological background, mechanical competence and knowledge of proper control procedures. Knowledge of legal requirements and safety regulations are vital, too. With a large number and variety of references, Bellmer GapCon has proved to be a highly competent partner to paper mills for slitter winders.
