Smurfit Kappa Navarra Successful start-up of PM 4
Navarra paper mill, which is part of the Smurfit Kappa Group, is located in Sangüesa in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the northern Spanish province of Navarra. Smurfit Kappa Navarra has completed an extensive project together with Bellmer Ibérica, transforming the test- and kraftliner-producing PM 1 into PM 4 for high quality MG paper production based on 100% virgin fiber. MG paper is used mainly for food packaging, shopping bags and wrapping paper. The first step was to expand the machine hall. PM 1 then had to be completely dismantled, before it was possible to build the new PM 4. The heart of PM 4 is the new TURBOVaathoJetter™ headbox which, with its unique technology, produces paper of the highest quality. In addition, the high-frequency TURBOShaker™ improves formation. The bi-nip press part, including a TURBOPress™ shoe press, ensures high dry contents. With budget in mind, some parts of PM 1 could be reused, such as the supply and exhaust systems.

The installation of the world's largest Yankee cylinder for MG paper with a diameter of 6.7 m was another project highlight.

supply also included automation and the electrical drive. Engineering, project management and start-up were performed by our Spanish subsidiary Bellmer Ibérica.

The result was a MG paper machine with 2,500mm wide paper at the reel, designed to operate at 1,000 mpm, which produces MG papers from 25 to 120 g/m².

SKN project manager Enrique Sanz explained to Bellmer Ibérica project Manager Asier Gogorza at the start up: “the machine looks very good with the flexibility to achieve our goals. It will give us a great deal of satisfaction.”
